Before you dive

Here are the answers to the questions we are asked most often before a dive in Nuku Hiva. Questions specific to each topic (dives, sites, services, prices, centre, island, contact) are on the corresponding page: find them all below, sorted by topic.
What should I bring to dive with Nuku-Dive?

All the diving equipment is provided. Bring your diver certification card, physical or digital, which is mandatory in French Polynesia. We also recommend your logbook. On site, you will fill in a medical fitness questionnaire for diving.

Do I need a medical certificate to dive in French Polynesia?

A medical fitness questionnaire is mandatory for everyone. If you answer “yes” to any question, or if you are 60 or over, you will be asked for a medical certificate of fitness for scuba diving issued less than a year ago. These are regulatory requirements in French Polynesia.

I haven’t dived for more than a year: can I dive with Nuku-Dive?

Yes. If your last dive was more than a year ago, a refresher dive is required before the exploration dives. Supervised by an instructor, it lets you get back into the swing of things and check your comfort level safely. Its price is shown on the Prices page.

Can a companion who does not dive come along?

Yes: a non-diving companion can discover Nuku Hiva’s underwater world snorkeling, on the afternoon trip, on request, depending on the weather and the places available on board. This trip takes participants to the Champ jaune site, and to the manta rays if they are around.

Can we dive from our own boat or sailboat?

Yes: on request, a Nuku-Dive instructor can join you directly on your own vessel, for example your sailboat at anchor. Contact us to arrange this tailor-made service.

Can you fill scuba tanks for a visiting boat?

Yes, occasionally: Nuku-Dive can fill a tank to ensure safety on board, for example to free a stuck anchor. This back-up service is not intended for independent diving on the dive sites. Contact us to arrange it.

Do you have the necessary safety and emergency equipment for diving?

Yes. Our boat MOANA III carries all the mandatory safety and emergency equipment for diving, including oxygen and a first-aid kit. The diving equipment is also regularly checked and serviced by our technician.

Is diving dangerous in the Marquesas?

The nearest hyperbaric chamber is in Tahiti, about 3 hours 30 minutes away by plane, so caution is essential. Nuku-Dive limits depth to 40 metres for Level 3 divers and above, does not allow any dive requiring mandatory decompression stops, and only offers single dives to certified children under 15.
